The promotion of a healthy lifestyle is the purpose why we celebrate Nutrition Month. This is yearly conducted in the month of July throughout the country. This year the theme of the said activity is ““Malnutrisyon Patuloy Na Labanan First 1000 Days Tutukan!” prompted the collaboration of the Natural Science Department (Nat. Sci. Dept.) , Nutrition and Dietetics Department (ND Dept.) as the lead implementor and Social Work Department (SW Dept.) of the College of Arts, Sciences and Letters (CASL) in partnership with the Municipality of Lingayen, Pangasinan to conduct an extension webinar entitled: “Information Advocacy on the High Nutritional Value and Medicinal Properties of Malunggay”. This webinar provides a well balance diet not only to our health but also to the mind thus the aim is to provide IEC materials about the high nutritional value and medicinal properties of malunggay, to conduct memory games about the high nutritional value and medicinal properties of malunggay and lastly, to conduct lecture on rights of the children. This webinar is conducted last July 24, 2021 at PSU DVITC Lingayen.

The participants of the webinar are the following: LGU officials, SK Chairs, SK kagawads, Rural Health Workers, the Barangay Nutrition Scholar, youth leaders, faculty and personnel of Pangasinan State University. Lecture on Nutritional and Medicinal value of malunggay is delivered by Dr. Lina Cancino, Department Chairperson of Natural Science while Ms. Jobelle R. Navarro, faculty member of ND department shared her knowledge on First 1000 days of Life she said that the golden window of opportunity is in this period and their are evidenced showed that this is the best time to prevent the onset of malnutrition on the children. On the other hand, Ms. Geraldine M. Nineza, faculty member of ND department discussed the nutritional value of malunggay with the title “Sustansyang Taglay ng Malunggay”. Mrs. Nineza re-iterate the nutrient content and function as well as the benefits of malunggay to human health and added that malunggay can be a potential alternative to help treat some illnesses/diseases.

Animation Video where Super M which stands for malunggay is presented by Ms. Sharlene Cherry S. De Guzman, faculty member of Nat. Sci. Department. The video, Super M helps the people by incorporating malunggay into their regular diet as a food flavoring or as an ingredient to meals/ food. Furthermore, a recorded video on demonstration of malunggay enriched vapor rub by Dr. Lina T. Cancino and Ms. Girlie Fernandez was showed to the participants. Another recorded video wherein it shows the demonstration of malunggay enriched hand soap by Dr. Cancino and Mr. Eleazar De Jesus. The last presenter was Ms. Paz Cherry Ann V. Soriano, faculty member of Nat. Sci. Department she lectured the maternal and child health programs which aimed to decrease the mortality rate. Then, Dr. Weenalei T. Fajardo, faculty member of Nat. Sci. Department facilitated open forum to answer the questions of the participants.

Afternoon session is the lecture of Ms. Helen G. Viray, She highlighted the importance and benefits of breastmilk. Accordingly, breastmilk is readily available and superior compared to other milk. Mrs. Viray also added the issues while breastfeeding such as inverted nipple. Ms. Catherine Anne P. Atutubo, chairperson of the SW department discussed the basic rights of children wherein she highlighted the importance of promoting the rights of children since they are the most vulnerable sector in the community. Mr. Barrera, facilitated a short game to all participants while Ms. De Guzman, launched the malunggay mobile games. She showed how the game will work and how to download it.

After the extension program, the extensionists distributed personally the certificates of participation, t-shirts, the tarpaulin of the barangays and the gift packs to the participants in cooperation with the  SK coordinator and researcher, Mr. Rod Dela Cruz.
