The establishment of this innovation hub is a culmination of strategic efforts spanning several weeks. The collaboration commenced with a significant visit by the PSU Lingayen team, led by Campus Executive Director Dr. Renato E. Salcedo and strongly supported by University President Dr. Elbert Galas, to the DOST-PTRI facilities last April 2025. This engagement laid the groundwork for leveraging scientific and technical expertise to bolster local textile development.
“The support of DOST PTRI and the University administration led by University President Dr. Elbert M. Galas to this project is truly overwhelming as PSU endeavors put the province of Pangasinan in the Philippine textile map” said Dr. Caren O. Ventayen, Coordinator for International Linkages and Project Leader of PSU-DOST PTRI collaborative ventures. The Garments and Fashion Design team of the College of Teacher Education and College of Industrial Technology forms the technical working group of this project together with experts and personnel from DOST PTRI.
The Mapita Handloom Weaving Innovation Hub is envisioned as a dedicated space to further enhance the traditional weaving practices of the indigenous communities. It will serve as a center for skill development, product diversification, and ultimately, a pathway to greater economic opportunities for the Mapita community while ensuring the vibrant continuity of their cultural heritage.
This momentous launch is a step in PSU Lingayen and DOST-PTRI’s broader strategy to put Pangasinan firmly on the Philippine textile map.
The establishment of the Mapita Handloom Weaving Innovation Hub stands as a testament to the power of collaboration in fostering sustainable development, preserving cultural identity, and creating a brighter future for the local communities of Pangasinan.
